Hostgator Review Home
Hi! My names Jay. Thanks for checking out my Hostgator Blog! Feel the power of “The Gator!” I suppose you want to cut to the chase and check out the latest Hostgator Discount coupons.
I setup this site and I had got a little tired of the fake hosting review or the format of many web hosting “topsites.” You can submit your real end user experiences with Host Gator (good or bad) or alternatively submit your new review and suggest another good web host for me to cover!
I moved over quite a few sites over to Hostgator for quite a few reasons. Firstly, although I’m based in the UK, a lot of my sites I require a “US presense” for targeting US customers and search engines, yet the cost at the time didn’t quite justify a VPS or dedicated server yet. I think quite a few people forget about hosting logistics for SEO purposes.
I’ve been hosting with Hostgator.com for nearly a year now. To be honest I wasn’t expecting much, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. You know what it can be be like with some cheap web hosts. A few months ago I received and email from Hostgator Support stating they were updating the operating system, on the server my hosts are on, to the latest Centos Enterprise Linux. I was expecting hours of downtime. Had it not been for the email I wouldn’t have known!
I have what is known as a “reseller hosting “account. More accurately, this should be called multi domain hosting as you don’t have to be a hosting reseller to use it. Reseller hosting is great because you can host as many sites as you want, providing you don’t exceed the overall bandwith or server disc quota allocation. Helpfully Hostgator provide an indication in the control panel showing your resource usage.
The other main difference between reseller hosting and standard hosting is that you get access to WHM (Web Host Manager) to setup your domains. With standard Hostgator hosting I assume, you have access to Cpanel. Within WHM you can create, suspend individual accounts, set passwords, control quota’s and edit DNS and install Frontpage (if you need it). Thats the “hosting administrator” side taken care of.
For each domain or website you create in WHM you get a unique Cpanel, accessed from www.yourdomain/cpanel. With Cpanel, you can create email accounts, install scripts, view webalizer logs etc. Also with this sort of account I used my own used private name servers; you don’t have to use Hostgator default name server.s This isn’t just vanity. If you are reselling Hostgator Hosting it makes you look a little more professional should your clients ever view their WHOIS entries.
Another requirement was that the hosting had to be Linux and have Cpanel with Fantastico. The reason being, I have to carry out lots of installations of WordPress and Joomla, and Fantastico is a great time saver. Fantastico is basically a script vault and installer, kept constantly up to date. Bundled scripts include WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, PHP-Nuke, Help Center Live, Cube Cart, OS Commerce, Photo Galleries, PHPlist, TikiWiki, Open-Realty, PHPauction and many others.
The other thing I’ve noticed about Hostgator are the impressive speeds. Hostgators network is entirely based in “ThePlanet” datacentre in Texas. However the ping times and website access from here in London are still impressive.
